Rarotonga Road Improvement Project, Takuvaine to Avatiu Contract Signing

Infrastructure Cook Islands is pleased to announce the signing of the Rarotonga Road Improvement Project, Takuvaine to Avatiu Contract between Triad Pacific Petroleum Ltd and Infrastructure Cook Islands.

The contract includes the upgrading of approximately 4.6km of the existing road network in Takuvaine and Avatiu. Construction activities are expected to start on site in March 2017 with completion expected late 2017. During the works disruptions to the public’s travel can be expected. Road closures and detours will be publically advised throughout the construction works and the contractor will limit the impact of the works on the public as far as practicable. We appreciate the public’s understanding as these works are completed.

This Contract is part of the wider Rarotonga Road Improvement Programme resulting from the governments on going investment in roading infrastructure in Rarotonga. Key outcomes of the project are to provide improved access and an increased level of service for the roading network. The renewal and improvement of roading in Rarotonga will provide robust and resilient roading assets which will assist with the continued social and economic growth of Rarotonga and the Cook Islands.  This programme contributes towards Outcome 3 of the ICI Strategic Plan “Sustainable Infrastructure” and Strategic Goal 3.2 –“Access for all to reliable transport” through the Output of ensuring that “all public roads in the Cook islands are fullytrafficable.”

The contracting out of these major roadworks to the private sector is consistent with the draft National Roads and Read Drainage Policy, on which ICI concluded public consultation in January 2017. Triad Pacific Petroleum Ltd has a long history of roading construction in the Cook Islands and Infrastructure Cook Islands looks forward to a successful relationship and implementation of this portion of the Rarotonga Road Improvement Project.
