ICI monitors, maintains and replaces the bridges on Rarotonga. Bridges are important to transportation and movement on the island.
ICI has a bridge replacement schedule where each year, selected bridges are attended to. The bridge improvements that are under way now and coming up are listed below.
Vaimutu’ Stream Bridge Deck Replacement
ICI is working to replace the Vaimutu Stream bridge in Avatiu, Rarotonga. The existing bridge abutments and wingwalls are in good condition and only require minor maintenance. Therefore only the bridge deck needs replacing.
The project includes a raised footpath and cycle lanes across the bridge. New guardrail barriers will be installed on both sides of the bridge.
Ngatoe and Turoa Stream Bridge Replacement Design
ICI will be contracting a suitable design consultant to assist with completing the detailed design of Ngatoe and Turoa Stream Bridges. The design of the bridges will utilise similar methods to the Vaimutu’uri (Avatiu) and Takuvaine Stream (Empire) bridges that have been replaced in recent years. Under the bridge asset management programme these two bridges have been identified as the most in need for replacement in the coming years.
