COOK ISLANDS ELECTRICAL WORKERS
REGISTRATION BOARD

Newsletter #01 / 16 December 2024

Kia orana Contractors,

We are writing to emphasize the critical importance of obtaining wiring permits for “New and Additional” electrical installations and conducting workplace health and safety awareness programs.

Wiring Permit Requirements
All electrical work requires a wiring permit before commencement, including:
1. New build homes
2. Commercial outlets
3. Air conditioner installations (exceeding 3.5kW loads or additions pushing existing installations beyond 3.5kW)
4. Electrical modifications (extensions to existing installations)

This requirement aligns with the Energy Act 1998 and Energy Regulations 2006 and beyond the Electrical Registration Boards jurisdiction.

Contractor Responsibilities
1. Electrical contractors must obtain the Electrical Wiring Permit
2. Permit cost is $115 per permit, as set by current legislation
3. Contractors must employ an EWRB approved “E Class” tradesman to ensure compliance with regulations

Non-Compliance Consequences
The Board of Directors will issue summons an “AUDIENCE” to non-compliant Contractors to enforce the Cook Islands Energy Act 1998 & Energy Regulations 2006.

Electrical Safety Awareness
Implementing a workplace electrical safety awareness program is crucial. This should include:
1. Training on fundamental safety practices and risk assessment
2. Emergency response and first aid for electrical incidents
3. Regulatory compliance information
For questions or clarifications, please contact the Electrical Inspectorate at ICI. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining high electrical work standards across our community.

Meitaki ma’ata for your commitment to safety. We wish you all a safe and enjoyable festive season.
