Infrastructure Cook Islands Civil Works Division shoulders the critical responsibility of maintaining the road network and managing roadside drainage on Rarotonga. Their primary objective, funded through the Rarotonga Asset Management administered funds, is to ensure that the road infrastructure is structurally sound and safe for all users.

In the area of disaster management, we are allocated funding for Emergency Response Work to swiftly address critical infrastructure challenges caused by severe weather events. This proactive approach helps safeguard road users and ensures that essential transportation corridors remain functional even in challenging conditions.

The Civil Works Division have four focus areas below:

Road Network Maintenance by regular upkeep of roads to ensure they are in good condition for safe travel. This includes repairing potholes, resurfacing, and general maintenance to extend the lifespan of roads, reducing the frequency of repairs and the overall cost of maintenance and slow the pace of road deterioration.

Roadside Drainage Maintenance by managing and maintaining drainage systems alongside roads to prevent flooding, erosion, and other issues that could affect road safety and durability.

Emergency Response Work by addressing urgent situations caused by natural events such as strong winds, cyclones, heavy rainfall, flooding, and high tides. Minimizing disruptions to transportation routes and ensuring public safety during and after weather-related events.

Asset Management  by efficiently managing assets related to road infrastructure, including equipment, machinery, and materials, to support ongoing maintenance and improvement efforts.

By focusing on these areas, the Civil Works division aims to create and maintain a reliable road network that promotes safe and efficient transportation across Rarotonga. This infrastructure not only supports everyday mobility but also contributes to the economic and social well-being of the community by facilitating commerce, tourism, and overall connectivity.
